The University of Oxford is an internationally reputed institution which is located at Oxford OX1 2JD in the United Kingdom. The University of Oxford is also the oldest university in the English-speaking world. This historic institution has no clear date of foundation. But, the historical evidence indicates that teaching existed at Oxford nearly in 1096. However, the university was rapidly developed from 1167 when Henry II banned English students from joining the University of Paris. The Central University
The central University is has many different sections such as academic and administrative departments, libraries and museums, etc. So, actually, it doesn’t have a main campus. Rather, there are roughly 100 major academic departments which are regulated under 4 academic divisions. The four academic divisions are:-

- Mathematical,
- Physical and Life Sciences,
- Humanities and Social Sciences.
Every department organises both teaching and research in a different subject area. It also has many research centres and sub-departments. For example, the Department for Continuing Education offers more than 1,000 courses each year.
The Colleges and Halls
There are up to 39 Oxford colleges and 6 permanent private halls. Financially, these colleges are independent and self-governing. Each college has its own membership. And also, each college maintains its own internal structure and activities. The colleges are just connected to the central university in a kind of federal system.
Both the colleges and halls bring students together with researchers from different cultures and countries. This helps to bring up the outstanding research achievement that has made Oxford a leader in so many fields.
Almost all the students of University of Oxford is a member of a college. Most of the colleges of University of Oxford admit both graduate and undergraduate students.
Admissions Procedure (In Brief)
- The undergraduate admissions process is mainly organized by colleges. Primarily, colleges select and admit their undergraduate students. However, this process is also co-ordinated by the University.
- Graduate students are selected by the University. But once the students have been offered a place by the University, then they are also selected by a college.
Facilities and resources
There are lots of facilities and resources. For example:-
- Accommodation, catering, social spaces, pastoral care, etc. are provided by colleges
- The University also provides centralised student services, careers and counselling, as well as resources such as libraries, laboratories and museums.
Teaching
Mainly, colleges organize tutorial teaching for undergraduate students. However, tutorials are central to studying at Oxford and also giving students an opportunity to discuss and explore their subject and research in small groups with an expert in the field. Centrally, University supervises graduate students and examines graduate theses. University itself sets and marks examinations and awards degrees to students.
